Our program provides both recreational and social activities to adults who suffer with mental illness. The population suffers with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, mood disorders and personality disorders.
We have a morning program that runs from 9-1 Monday through Friday and an evening program that runs from 3:30-7:30 Monday through Thursday. The intern would be free to choose a schedule that they are most comfortable with. We do not provide classic therapy services but most of the people working here are mental health professionals (social workers, art therapists, etc.) and we work closely with the patients medical team, so it is a great experience in a team setting.
The intern would assist the staff in running recreation groups, the aim of which is to increase socialization and social skills. The intern would have the chance to implement their own groups and would receive supervision from a mental health professional.
This is an unpaid internship with flexible hours to fit a students schedule Students would not be required to gain credits for their time with us. Any students interested in pursuing a career in psychology, psychiatry or the mental health field are welcome to apply. Students interested in art therapy, music therapy, dance therapy or recreation therapy are especially encouraged to apply as they will gain direct experience working with professionals from those fields.
Please feel free to contact either our director, Rachel or our program coordinator, Stephanie at 718-831-2000 regarding our program. Students may forward their resumes directly to this email so that we can arrange a time for them to come in and meet the staff and see our facility.
